This place is too small. It’s closing in on me. Mr. Bank (I’ll call him) has lived 98 ½ years of life.
When I was 10 years old, I worked on a chicken farm for ten cents a day. I wouldn’t even think about keeping any of that money for myself. My mom took care of me and my younger sisters. I learned a lot about farming. My boss told me I was smart!
Did I tell you I’m a Vietnam Vet? I was a paratrooper. Some people didn’t think that was smart. I loved it and was good at it. I used to be very organized.
The doctors told me I have chronic fatigue. My mind works great, but the body doesn’t agree.
Owing this business means I own the outcome of my clients. Everyone has a story and a pain point. Listening allows me to key in on what’s really important. How can we help them transition to a safe, healthy, and enjoyable living space?
He never wanted to move. He said the doctors used his sister and forced him to live closer to his daughter in North Carolina. It appeared to me that he told the movers, drop the boxes there! It has been 3 years since the transition. His rebellion was evident.
Our conversation was warm. He asked me about my life. I shared. He shared how much racism hurt him after the war. I could still hear the pain in his voice. Mr. Banks is an avid reader and collector of books, magazines, and historical data.
In preparation to propose a plan, I asked him if we could pray together. (he was holding a Bible on his lap, so I believed he would agree.) He said sure! His daughter who was sitting in the room joined us.
A calm came over the room. Difficult to put in words, but the atmosphere shifted. After a brief prayer time, we open our eyes. He asked me, what do you want me to do? Slightly shocked I said, “let me help you make this your new home.”
My team and I received little to no resistance from him. We work while Mr. Banks listen to classical music, read, or occasionally watch the news. Fabulous!! Simple Marvelous! You are awesome!!! He couldn’t stop praising us for our work.
He insists!!! You MUST come! Have dinner with me. Our chef is phenomenal and you must be my guest. We have movies in the theater every night and bible study on Wednesday!!!
He was home! How could I resist?
